Then, the sales woman informs me that she cannot make change for a fifty. I comment that that is a very interesting way to run a 'business' ( I say business in quotations, as truly, a monopoly is not a business.) She informs me that she has been trained that she cannot except a 50, unless I spend 'half of that'. ???? This is your policy? You cannot make 38.00 in change? You only except 20.00 bills on a sale of 12.00????

Sometimes, as I said, out of convenience, I will hold my nose and purchase some mediocre wine from this place, usually after the staff somehow tries to 'educate' me and assist me with their recommendations. This is laughable. It is the illusion of a well trained and industrious sales force, but in truth, as the sale of liquor is held by only very few, there is an appalling lack of effort on behalf of these retailers to actually provide a decent service. I do not need advice from a twenty three year old with kool aid coloured hair when buying wine, but thanks for asking.

Friendly & convenient. They always offer delicious samples. For me, I'm very happy they stock my favourite ciders.

Now, in case you mistake this for a general rant about the state of this monopoly in this God forsaken Province, read on:

I figured I would pick up a bottle of red, and drink it with dinner, while watching a ball game this afternoon. Simple enough, you would think.

Needless to say, you lost that sale, and any future sales. And, I would expect that you simply do not care, actually. Why should you?

The problem is, that when there is virtually NO competition in the sale of alcohol, there is NO need, at all, to offer a decent product, or decent service, or keep hours that would seem obvious to anyone who was actually trying to make a living in a climate where consumers were allowed to choose between retailers.

As the sale of wine, beer and spirits in this Province is so tightly controlled, at times I resort to shopping in this sad little shop where the selection is poor, but the location is convenient to my home. I would prefer of course to be able to choose a wine other than Niagara, or the Niagara wines diluted with varietals from South America, Italy, Australia, etc........however, it would seem the Government of Ontario prefers to limit my choice, or force me to drive to one of their stores. I cannot blame the Wine Rack for having to obey these ridiculous and patronizing regulations.

Not so, I place the Zinfandel on the counter, and a fifty dollar bill. The bottle itself costs 12.00. So far so good.

    You have virtually no competition.

And, you will all lose your jobs, when people are able to buy wine with their other groceries, as they do, in every other country.
